Pig farming is facing a period of major climate challenges. Besides the climate objectives from governments and the market, the sector itself is also facing the consequences of climate change. In the VLAIO-LA KLIMREK trajectory, a climate trajectory for the pig farming sector was developed - as the last one - which has not yet been sufficiently applied and not yet been propagated in the sector at all. The Klimrek climate trajectory consists, on the one hand, of a climate scan, in which pig farmers get a detailed insight into their climate impact per production process on the farm and, on the other, of a climate trajectory in which farm-specific climate measures can be simulated so that pig farmers can more easily take into account the impact for their own farms.
Through this demonstration project, we want to publicise and demonstrate the existence of this climate pathway so that we can sensitise and encourage as many pig farmers as possible to get started with the Klimrek climate pathway themselves. Demonstration consists of the effective implementation of new climate pathways and the targeted demonstration of certain climate measures on sample farms. New climate trajectories lead to a more robust benchmark for Flemish pig farming. By cooperating with the pilot centres, we capture their practical experience and complete the database with appropriate climate measures.
